BLACK JOBS FOR BLACK WRITERS
Earlier in the week I realized how much under-utilized Black talent there is in America.
Many Black professionals are unemployed or under-employed. Here I am, a doctor who went to undergraduate at Cornell University, graduated medical school from Yale School Of Medicine and did my residency Boston medical center. Twenty years later spent one year at Harvard doing public health. A syncopal episode that resulted in a severe concussion and a missed diagnosis set me back five years.
So now being better, finally gotten treatment, I so want to work. There is a clear need for a Black mainstream media. Presently, most Black news sites report almost the same as White ones (shallow stories about Black celebrities). This is not to criticize, just to understand why we are at the bottom of the rung.
I got the idea to start my own publishing company, where we publish news pertaining to communities of color. I decided to recruit only/mostly Black writers. Given our high unemployment rate I thought that would not be a problem, but it was. There are many able Black writers, yet they just don’t want to write for a new outfit like mine. So they instead wait around for the New York Times, the Daily News or the Washington Post to give them their big break. Once they get that opportunity they then write everything from a White perspective, instead of from our perspective. And that is a big difference!
We have a great culture to be proud of. Only forgotten by slavery and the diaspora. I want us to build an infrastructure for communities of color.
